strawberry festival 2010

Sunday we were invited to a strawberry festival on a farm just a shade north of the Merritt Parkway in Stratford, CT. It was amazing to step onto this 3 acre property and see Joe’s gardens,  chickens and old farm buildings. The invitation said to bring something that goes with or was made with strawberries. This is a bit embarrassing, but I made JELL-O Pie.  It just tastes like a summer day straight from June. Here’s Farmer Joe giving a tour of his vegetable gardens. I cannot believe he has a ful-time job as an attorney. I have no idea how he manages to keep everything growing!I figured this had to be asparagus, out to seed. In her book Animal Vegetable, Miracle, Barbara Kingsolver described their appearance as feathery and she’s exactly right! There are fresh eggs all the time. See the black one? I love the puffy white plumes on its head! What to do on a summer day in a huge yard? Play whiffleball. This is the interior of one of the little out-buildings. I don’t know why, but it’s one of my favorite shots of the day. Thanks Joe, I hope we get invited next year!

  1. I added a link to the JELL-O pie up there in the post. Embarassing enough… it reads like an ad for Kraft Foods! Feel free to ad-lib and start love from scratch… but I’ll have to save that daydream for a day when I have more free time in the kitchen.
