in season: strawberries

Strawberries are coming on the scene here in Connecticut, but in the blink of an eye, the season is over. You’ve got about 3 weeks to get this local, highly perishable treat. There’s simply no comparison with the ones that are flown 3000 miles to our supermarkets year round. I like get up on a Saturday and pick in the early morning at Jones Family Farms in Shelton. With our upcoming trip to Austin, I’m not sure if I’ll be picking my own berries this month…
Today was the first farmer’s market across the street from my office. There weren’t many vendors, but I couldn’t wait to get this ruby red taste of summer. This summer I hope to get back to the Stone Barns in Westchester County, NY for a pint of the fraise de bois. Those teeny woodland berries are the best I’ve ever eaten.
